A dental implant is made of titanium and is used in prosthetic dentistry to maintain one or many teeth. Implants are placed directly at the bone, and after a healing period, they are used as a support for different types of dental reconstruction such as crowns, dental bridges or dentures. Implants are a durable and long lasting replacement method for missing teeth. More than 90% of them last over 12 years. Implants are also more comfortable to maintain and use than bridges or various types of dentures. Teeth restored using implants look and feel almost as natural teeth.

The standard implant is composed of a titanium screw, which imitates the tooth root. Most are made ​​from pure titanium, which is available in 4 scales of purity, (depending on the content of the coal and iron in the melt). Generally, all individuals who have good bone quality will qualify for the implantology treatment. Before the treatment commences, patient’s jaws, bones and gums are assessed to ensure suitability for the surgery. For a thorough diagnosis, most patients will require a computer tomography scan, known as a CT scan.

Implant surgery can be performed by certified dentists of all specialities as well as maxillofacial jaw surgeons. The requirements for dentists to perform these treatments vary depending on the country in which the procedure is to be executed.
